Packet loss over IP Networks

Packet loss over IP Network happens when a packet doesn't make it to destination and back again in time. Packet loss is a common but often-misunderstood occurrence in TCP/IP networks. Network connections are designed to auto-correct for this problem.

Packet Loss , upto several percentage , can occur in properly designed network including Wire line networks. Packet loss performance over Tikona Wi-Bro Network is comparable to Wireline networks . See report on ... -isps.html .

Anything over 2% packet loss over a period of time is indicator of some problem. Most internet protocols can correct for some packet loss, so you really shouldn't expect to see a lot of impact from packet loss until that loss starts to approach 5% and higher. Some real time applications such as VoIP, VPN or Video may be more sensitive to packet loss.

Measurement of packet loss by using ping or tracert over Tikona Network may give misleading results as ICMP packets (used by ping or tracert ) are assigned lowest priority over network segments and also ICMP responses are rate limited , thereby artificially inflating the packet loss rate reported by ping.ICMP packet are altogether blocked to many tikona IP address including Gateway IP address , , and Many external networks (e.g. . This is to prevent network abuse and to make sure that your data packets are handled most efficiently .

Further , if your bandwidth utilization is above 70% or you are running many background / Packet filter applications the reported packet loss could be much higher .

Packet loss causes a spike in latency — the receiver has to communicate to the sender that the packet was missing. If there is significant packet loss, this results in a lot of latency, a lot of re-sent data, and ultimately a low-bandwidth connection . Bandwidth and Latency can be measured on which in turn is indicative of Packet loss .Make sure you have turned-off Anti Virus or other packet filtering application and not running any background bandwidth hungry software while doing speedtest .
